Education
The Department of Surgery teaches medical students the fundamentals of general surgery (click here for program details) and also trains physicians to become surgeons in different specialties. Our residency and fellowship programs are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, which is responsible for the accreditation of post-MD medical training programs within the United States.
Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency (Fellowship)
General Surgery Residency
Surgical Critical Care Residency (Fellowship)
Vascular Surgery Residency — New five-year program, plus traditional two-year fellowship
Since 1975 when our first graduating residents entered the profession of surgery, 185 physicians have completed their residency training in general surgery at Stony Brook. The alumni of our residency program now practice surgery throughout the United States, as well as in numerous other countries around the world — and we're proud of their diverse achievements and contributions to medicine.
Nota bene: Applicants to our training programs are encouraged to appreciate that Stony Brook University Medical Center has been recognized as one of the top teaching hospitals in the nation, and that life on Long Island is about town (NYC) and country (SB).
