Welcome to the Stony Brook Comprehensive Spine Center

Each year, the specialists of the Stony Brook Comprehensive Spine Center help thousands of people with back and neck problems return to work, school, sports, hobbies, or simply enjoying life again. Our patients include children and adolescents as well as adults with degenerative or developmental diseases of the neck, back, and spine.

We welcome many of Suffolk and Nassau counties’ most complex and difficult cases, including scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, flatback syndrome, and tumors of the spine. We also help patients with more common conditions—herniated disks, spinal stenosis, and degenerative arthritis of the spine, for example—to regain function and relieve their pain. An important portion of the surgical practice consists of technically demanding revision surgery for problems related to failed prior procedures.  Additionally, as Suffolk county’s only level 1 trauma center we have the largest experience with spinal cord injury and trauma in all of Long Island.

Multispecialty Approach. Robert Galler, DO, FACOS, of the Department of Neurological Surgery, and Mark Stephen, MD, of the Department of Orthopaedics, lead a multidisciplinary team with a broad range of expertise in treating neck and back (spine) problems.

  • Electromyogram (EMG) nerve conduction studies
  • Endovascular neurosurgery
  • Interventional neuroradiology
  • Microsurgery
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Pediatric orthopaedic surgery
  • Physical therapy
  • Therapeutic spine injections

Working together, the spine team upholds the highest standards within each doctor’s respective medical field to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients. Conservative management is the focus, with our non-surgical spine interventionalist working in close conjunction with the surgeons, neurologists, and physical therapists. If physical therapy, medication, and noninvasive approaches fail, surgery may be an elective, quality-of-life decision that the patient will make with the guidance of a surgeon whom they trust. Our referring physicians and other clinical care providers are kept in communication to ensure continuity of care.

Comprehensive Services.  The Spine Center team is equipped with the latest technology, clinical expertise, and ancillary services only available at an academic medical center and Level 1 trauma center like Stony Brook University Medical Center. As a result, our services are the most comprehensive in the region. From advanced diagnostics to complex surgeries to physical therapy and rehabilitation, we seek to meet the full gamut of spinal medical needs. We are committed to improving quality of life through rehabilitation and the ethical practice of spinal surgery.

Innovative Care. The Stony Brook Comprehensive Spine Center is committed to research and education. As a result, our patients have access to the latest breakthroughs and best practices in spinal medicine.
