  • Two weeks of Radiology and Two weeks of Emergency Medicine must be taken sometime in the third or fourth year. No matter when you take the Radiology requirement, the Clerkship must be taken. If you take the Emergency Medicine requirement in the third year, you must take the clerkship. If you take the Emergency Medicine requirement in the fourth year, you must take the elective.
  • Neurology (can be taken in 3rd during elective time or during the 4th year during elective time)
  • Other electives for which you have fulfilled the pre-requisites can also be taken
  • If you are in the MD with Recognition program, consider taking research during your 3rd year elective time to free up clinical elective time during the 4th year.

The third year consists of the core clerkships listed above and 4 weeks of elective time, or a total of 48 weeks.  The 4 weeks of Elective time are required.

The elective weeks are taken either before or after the Psychiatry clerkship. Only one 4 week period can be used for electives. Third year electives are taken at Stony Brook, Winthrop, NUMC or the Northport  VAMC. You must meet the pre-requisite requirement before you take an elective. The pre-requisites are listed in the elective course descriptions. There are no pre-requisite requirements for the Radiology and Emergency Medicine rotations so they can be taken any time they are offered. Neurology, also a requirement for graduation, can also be taken during the 3rd year elective weeks. The Neurology department will set up the clerkship during your elective time period, whenever it occurs. Contact Doris Boehle at 444-7878 or Doris.Boehle@stonybrook.edu for Neurology.

Six (6) weeks of clinical work must be completed at the Stony Brook University Medical Center and can be done during either third or fourth year.
