Fine, M.D., center,with Gaston Zilleruelo, M.D., Chief of Pediatric Nephrology, University of Miami (left), and Jose Strauss, M.D.nd outgoing Dean of Stony Brook University School of Medicine, has been honored by his peers in Pediatric Nephrology with the 2010 Jose Strauss Visiting Professorship Award. The honor is given annually by the University of Miami to a member of the Guest Faculty at its spring Pediatric Nephrology Seminar, attended by hundreds of Pediatric and Internal Medicine Nephrology specialists worldwide. The award recognizes Dr. Fine’s academic achievement and commitment to excellence in the field.
Dr. Fine, who will complete his tenure as Dean of SBU School of Medicine in July 2010, is internationally recognized for his expertise in the management of children requiring renal transplantation. He has lectured worldwide and is known for his clinical expertise in helping to advance pediatric nephrology by his pioneering efforts to adopt dialysis and renal transplantation for pediatric patients; for establishing peritoneal dialysis as an alternative for children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD); and for using recombinant human growth hormone to treat chronic renal insufficiency and ESRD and to improve growth retardation in renal allograft recipients.
“It was a privilege an honor to have given this award to Dr. Fine,” said Gaston Zilleruelo, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics and Chief, Division of Pediatric Nephrology, University of Miami. “Dr. Fine received the award not only for his academic achievements and commitment to excellence but also his overall human qualities as a role model for trainees and younger faculty.”
In March 2010, the University of Miami held its 37th Annual Pediatric Nephrology Seminar. Starting in 2007, the institution began awarding one Guest Faculty member each year, in honor of Jose Strauss, M.D., who retired as Chair of the Seminar in 2006.
The seminar features a comprehensive program that includes an international forum of pediatric and adult nephrologists, pediatricians, internists, renal pathologists, neonatologists, transplant surgeons, nurses, nutritionists and other healthcare providers dedicated to the diagnosis and management of kidney disorders in children. This year’s topics included sessions such as kidney diseases in newborns, inherited diseases, and epigenetics.
Dr. Fine has received many awards and honors in his 40+ year career. He has also served as President of the International Pediatric Transplant Association, and as President, American Society of Transplantation, the largest organization of transplant professionals in North America.
