Dean School of Medicine

Dr. Richard Fine, Dean of the School of Medicine

Dr. Richard N. Fine, a nationally renowned pediatric nephrologist and Distinguished Service Professor has served as the Dean of the School of Medicine since November 15, 2005.

During his academic career, Dr. Fine has been instrumental in adopting the emerging modalities of Dialysis and Renal Transplantation for pediatric patients and in establishing peritoneal dialysis as an alternative dialysis therapy for children with End-Stage Renal Disease (E.S.R.D.). He helped pioneer recombinant human growth hormone to treat children with chronic renal insufficiency and ESRD and the use of recombinant human Erythropoetin for anemic children undergoing dialysis. Dr. Fine has co-authored six textbooks dealing with Chronic Renal Insufficiency and ESRD in children, and is the Editor-In-Chief of Pediatric Transplantation.

Dr. Fine is   Past President of the American Society of Transplantation, which is the largest organization of transplant professionals in North America, President Elect of the International Pediatric Transplant Association and Vice-President-Treasurer of the North American Pediatric Transplant Cooperative Study.  Dr. Fine was most recently awarded the Founders Award by the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology.

"The School of Medicine is nationally and internationally renowned for producing important research in cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and many other areas," Dr. Fine said. "It also produces outstanding and caring physicians. The commitment to research and education is an important one for Long Island, the state, and the nation."

The School of Medicine at Stony Brook University Medical Center is responsible for the preclinical and clinical education of medical students (current enrollment: 450). As the only School of Medicine in the region, it offers excellent research and clinical opportunities and has attracted a faculty of national and international renown. While advancing the most modern concepts of medical education, the faculty participates in joint instructional experiences with faculty in other schools of The Health Sciences, with students enjoying the benefits of exposure to this multidisciplinary approach to education.

Trendsetter for Initiatives
As part of one of the nation's leading academic health centers, Stony Brook's School of Medicine is committed to fulfilling its abiding missions: research-based patient care, education, basic and clinical research, and community service. Using multi-disciplinary foci and partnerships that create a synergy among the schools and departments with external resources, the School of Medicine has developed a broad variety of centers of excellence. The School of Medicine serves as a hub, networking the life sciences at Brookhaven National Laboratories (BNL) and the genetics and molecular biology strengths at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories (CSHL) to create a synergy that has exponentially expanded clinical care; basic and translational research, and basic science advancement. Productive interaction between these groups is magnified within the Program in Structural Biology and Program in Infectious Disease that are co-located in the Centers for Molecular Medicine (a $40 million complex for biomedical research) at Stony Brook. The Centers for Molecular Medicine have formalized interdisciplinary collaborations by creating laboratories, some virtual and some real, that extend beyond the traditional departmental boundaries. The Medical School has also developed an academic Cancer Center that includes broad-based clinical care, as well as clinical, translational, and basic research programs. .

Effective and Innovative Educators and Researchers
Unsurpassed in its breadth of scientific disciplines, the Medical School has eight departments in the basic science disciplines: Anatomical Sciences , Biochemistry and Cell Biology , Biomedical Engineering , Cellular and Molecular Pathology , Molecular Genetics and Microbiology , Neurobiology and Behavior , Pharmacological Sciences , and Physiology and Biophysics . There are also eighteen clinical science departments: Anesthesiology , Dermatology , Emergency Medicine , Family Medicine , Medicine , Neurology , Neurosurgery , Obstetrics , Gynecology , and Reproductive Services , Ophthalmology , Orthopaedics , Pediatrics , Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Preventive Medicine , Psychiatry and Behavioral Science , Radiation Oncology , Radiology , Surgery , and Urology .

Preparing the Physicians of Tomorrow
The School of Medicine curricula have been continually refined, strengthened, and expanded, but always in keeping with its educational philosophy that emphasized individualization of instruction and development of the complete professional. We created a teaching mix that balances lecture classes with smaller, case-based courses. We also continue to increase the use of information technologies in teaching to familiarize students with these tools. Our curriculum enables students to come in contact with patient cases early in their studies. Students also have the opportunity to work side-by-side with world-renown researchers, if they chose. The medical school is one of only two institutions in the nation to offer an undergraduate concentration in Pharmacology. This nationally recognized program focuses on linking the theoretical with practical "hands on" knowledge of instrumentation used in biomedical research. Additionally, the medical school has long held a Medical Scientist Training Program grant from the National Institutes of Health. This program provides optimal training of medical students in medicine and research, culminating with the award of the combined M.D., Ph.D. degree.
