Four Year Course Requirements

Fourth Year Course Requirements General Information Listed below are the requirements to be fulfilled during the fourth year. Students register online (Cbase2 :Registration:Drop/adds) for all of these courses EXCEPT for electives taken at sites other than Stony Brook Hospital. You must meet with your advisor before submitting your registration request online. A total of 36 weeks of academic work must be successfully completed during the 4th year of which at least 16 weeks must be within the Stony Brook system. During the third and fourth year, at least 6 weeks of clinical rotations must be completed at Stony Brook Medical Center. In addition to the 20 weeks of mandatory courses (including SubI, Surgical Selectives, Psychiatry in Medicine, Neurology, MCS4 and Didactic), the remainder of the 36 weeks (16 weeks) must be filled with electives. (If you take Neurology during the third year, you'll need 20 weeks of elective time in the 4th year. If you take Neurology in the 4th year, you'll need 16 weeks of elective time in the 4th year to achieve the required 36 weeks of work.) Students set up their own electives using Cbase2, VSAS or paper applications, depending on the requirements established by the elective sites. Elective Approval forms MUST be submitted for ALL electives except those taken at SBUH, VA, WUH, NUMC, Peconic or Flushing Hospital no matter how you apply.

A 4 week rotation in Neurology must be taken either during the third or fourth year. Neurology must be taken in the Stony Brook system. At the end of the rotation, students must pass an NBME subject exam. Medicine in Contemporary Society 4 Students will complete a 2 week MCS4 course offering. A student must complete a 4 week didactic course. Each is offered only once a year. The dates are listed in registration online. You may choose from:
(Exact start and end dates are available at registration) MD/PhD students and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery students are exempt from the didactic but may take it if they elect to do so. Nine (9) two week sessions are offered. Choose one. This is a 4 week course consisting of 2 weeks of a surgical specialty and two weeks of anesthesiology. Dr. Louis Merriam will set up the choices of selectives and provide a description on the course description webpage. Students must send their requests for specialty choices to Dr. Merriam by July 1st or they will be placed in an available spot chosen by Dr. Merriam. In addition to the above course work, students must pass the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK, and the Step 2 CS exams. Step 2 CK must be taken before the end of February to assure a May graduation, before the end of August, to assure a December graduation. Step 2 CS must be taken by December 15th for a May graduation and by August 15th for a December graduation. At the end of the third year, students will take and must pass a “CPX” OSCE.
