| Donald P. Harrington is the Assistant Dean of Research and Director of Imaging Research. He is Professor of Radiology in the Division of Diagnostic Imaging and has a joint appointment with the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He received his medical degree from the Marquette University School of Medicine and completed a Radiology residency at a combined program at the University of Minnesota and Minneapolis Veterans Administration. He completed a Cardiovascular fellowship under the direction of Dr. Kurt Amplatz at the University Hospital, University of Minnesota. He is Board Certified in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Harrington served as Chairman of the Department of Radiology from 1991 through 2007. Prior to being Chairman at Stony Brook, Dr. Harrington was the Director of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Section at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Other hospital appointments include academic appointments at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and the University of California in San Francisco. As a radiologist, Dr. Harrington has developed an interest in Health Care Economics and technology development and assessment. His major research interests are in aspects of radiology informatics, including PACS, radiology and patient care, medical teaching, medical imaging processing. He received his Masters Degree in medical informatics from Columbia University and is an Adjunct Professor of Medical Informatics at Columbia. His major informatics research interest is developing a controlled radiology terminology to be used for radiology reporting. In the past, Dr. Harrington has also been involved in projects to develop Digital Subtraction Angiography and the use of Laser Energy in the therapy of atherosclerotic vascular disease. Dr. Harrington is a member of the Radiological Society of North America of which he is a member of the Electronics Communications Committee, American Heart Association, Society of Nuclear Medicine, Johns Hopkins Medical Society, Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (SCVIR), the Association of University Radiologists; Society of Thoracic Radiology, Society for Cardiac Angiography, Long Island Radiological Society, American College of Radiology, American College of Cardiology, New York Radiological Society of which he is a member of the Electronic Communication Ad hoc, Suffolk County Medical Society for Computer Applications in Radiology and the Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD). |
