- You will see a Radiation Oncologist and Neurosurgeon in consultation.
- When
the Radiation Oncologist and Neurosurgeon agree that Stereotactic Radio
surgery (SRS) is appropriate treatment for you, the scheduling process
will start.
-
An MRI of the
brain will be scheduled at Stony Brook University Hospital. While you
may have had a recent MRI, this MRI is for the planning of the SRS. The
scheduling Nurse from Radiation Oncology will call you with the date
and time of this MRI. We must leave a few days between the MRI and the
SRS for planning purpose.
-
The
Radiation Oncology Nurse and Neurosurgeon's secretary will work
together to schedule the date for SRS. The Radiation Oncology Nurse
will call you with this date.
-
Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology will obtain insurance approval.
-
Your Neurosurgeon's secretary will call with a date and time for History and Physical and preadmission testing.
-
The
Radiation Oncology Nurse will call you before the SRS to review the
procedure, answer any questions and give you an arrival time.
-
On
the day of the procedure, wear comfortable clothing; you must have
someone to drive you. Prepare to be at the least for 8 to 10 hours. Do
not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before SRS. If you
physician orders it, will give you a light lunch.
-
When
you see the Nurse Practitioner for the History and Physical, ask for
instructions regarding your medications. Mostly likely you will take
medications as you normally do. Please make sure you tell the Nurses
and your physicians if you make a "blood thinner" such as coumadin.
