Department of Radiation Oncology
The Department of Radiation Oncology offers state-of-the-art treatment for cancer patients including complete clinical evaluation and staging, individualized radiation therapy and follow-up care. Depending on the type of cancer to be treated, radiation therapy is administered either externally by clinical linear accelerators or internally, using brachytherapy implants for localized contact with the tumor
Five full-time radiation oncologists direct the department's facilities located at Stony Brook University Medical Center. To ensure integrated patient care, attending radiation oncologists cooperatively manage patients with the referring physicians and other oncologists involved in the patient's care. Attending physicians ensure that referring physicians are fully apprised of proposed treatment plans and results achieved during and after the treatment. Finally, a critical element of the department's team approach to patient care consists of comprehensive nursing care and social work services.
