Ongoing Research Projects: Sedation in the ICU: Our recent research findings on the use of a "co-sedative" regimen in the MICU has paved the way for other projects that will include: studies on the pharmacodynamics of ICU sedation, the use BIS (EEG-index) technology to monitor sedative therapy and new algorithms for medical sedation in the ICU. Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP): A prospective study is underway to study whether surveillance mini-BAL airway cultures can improve antibiotic use and clinical outcomes in VAP. We are collecting a large database on VAP subjects, which will enable us to explore a variety of unanswered questions in the microbiology and natural history of VAP. End-of-Life and Palliative ICU Care: We are evaluating a new standardized tool that is aimed at enhancing communication between physicians and family members early in the course of the patient's critical illness. The effect of this tool on indices of palliative care and resource utilization is being studied. E-mail: Paul.Richman@stonybrook.edu
