The GPPH is participating in the Stony Brook initiative with Richard Leakey's Turkana Basin Institute to improve public health and medical care for people living in the Turkana Basin, a remote area of Kenya.

In July, with the guidance of Samia Omar, the MPH program director at TBI, a dental team traveled to the region to perform a Dental Needs Assessment. The team consisted of 2 dentists, Drs. Laurence Wynn & Larissa Figari, 1 Kenyan dentist, Dr. Regina Mutave, 4 Stony Brook 4th year dental students, Anita Stavin, Matt Tangredi, Dan Iannotti, and Holly Shepherd as well as 1 McGill University 2nd year dental student Ryan Fraser. Dr. Figari and Mrs. Sheperd are current MPH students.

A report on the Needs Assessment will soon be furnished. Pictures of the excursion follow.

In the beginning of 2009, GPPH faculty members Melody Goodman and Lauren Hale and GPPH staff Jewel Stafford visited the Turkana Basin, returning with insight on opportunities for service there. These are a few of their pictures.

Our graduate, Samia Omar '08, has been instrumental in developing the health initiative in the Turkana Basin. See her contributions to the website Turkanabasin.org.
