Background:

Dr. Jonas is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences (elected), the American College of Preventive Medicine, the American Public Health Association, and the New York Academy of Medicine.  He is a Past President of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine, and a past member of the New York State Board for Medicine.  He is Editor-in-Chief of the American Medical Athletic Association Journal.

Publications:

He has authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited 11 books of his own and has collaborated on 17 others, on topics ranging from the first text book on the US health care system, Health Care Delivery in the United States, first published in 1977, (New York: Springer Publishing Co., 1977), to the first book on the sport of triathlon for beginners, Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals (New York: W.W. Norton, 1986, "Updated and Expanded" edition, 1999; 20th anniversary 2nd edition in preparation, 2006); to the first preventive medicine textbook organized around risk factors rather than around diseases, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Clinical Practice (Baltimore, MD: Williams and Wilkins, 1996; 2nd ed. Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, 2007), to Exercise is Medicine tm: The Exercise Prescription in Clinical Practice (working title, Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, 2008, in preparation, with Edward M. Phillips, MD as co-author), the official textbook for the new American College of Sports Medicine national program, "Exercise is Medicine tm."

On health policy, preventive medicine and public health, and drug abuse policy, Dr. Jonas has published over 135 professional articles, book chapters, and book reviews, and has delivered well over 100 papers at conferences and seminars.  In addition, he has published numerous articles in the lay press, primarily on exercise and sports, and for both lay and professional audiences has given many talks on various aspects of health, fitness, and wellness.  Further, on these topics he has had regular columns in several national publications (one currently), both lay and professional.

Personal: 

Dr. Jonas has two children of his own, Jacob, a pro-basketball scout/video-coordinator, and Lillian, an elementary school teacher, ages 34 and 33 respectively, and a stepson, Mark Newman, 34, an architect.  His wife is Mrs. Chezna Newman of New York City.  For recreation, Dr. Jonas bicycles, runs, PaceWalks, lifts weights, competes in triathlons and duathlons (2007 marked his 25th season in multi-sport racing; he has done over 185 races), skis and on a limited basis teaches skiing (he is certified at Level I by the Professional Ski Instructors of America), listens to classical music on the radio, watches pro sports on TV, and is an avid theater/opera/concerts/-museum-goer, and traveler.
