Neural Circuitry Underlying Alturistic Behavior

Principle Investigator: Christian Smith, PhD (University of Notre Dame)

Subcontractee: Stephanie Brown, PhD

Sponsored by: The John Templeton Foundation

Objectives: We aim to determine: (a) whether human altruism and human parenting responses activate similar networks of brain regions (b) whether activation of these networks are associated with beneficial health states in the helper (e.g., accelerated stress recovery) (c) whether activation of these networks differs as a function of 1) the relationship between the helper and recipient and/or 2) helpers' prior maternal experience (parents versus non-parents), 3) and helpers' level of dispositional empathy.
