Dr. Hyman has long been interested in the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for  eye diseases, as well as visual impairment.  She has expertise in clinical trials and study design, overseeing a multi-center clinical trial (COMET) that evaluated whether progressive addition lenses (i.e., no-line bifocals) were effective in slowing myopia progression compared to single vision lenses (the conventional treatment) in  children with mild to moderate juvenile onset myopia.  Dr. Hyman is also the curriculum director of an NIH K30 grant, a training program for clinical researchers that includes a didactic component and development of a research protocol. Recently, after obtaining funding from the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research, she now serves as the Director of the Diabetes and Peridontal Disease Trial  Coordinating Center.
