Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension
Fellowship Training Program

The goal of the Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program at Stony Brook University Medical Center is to provide the clinical and scientific experience to prepare graduates of pediatric residency programs for a career in academic pediatric nephrology. An ACGME-accredited three-year program of integrated clinical and research training is offered, dedicated to the care of children with renal disease.  While providing structure and guidance to the developing Pediatric Nephrologist, the fellowship program at Stony Brook encourages the trainee to develop individual interests and professional strengths.

The clinical component of the program involves both ambulatory and in-patient experience with pediatric patients ranging in age from the newborn to young adulthood, who have various nephrologic disorders including fluid and electrolyte imbalance, hypertension, acute and chronic renal failure, and congenital and acquired abnormalities of the renal-genitourinary tract. The management of pediatric patients requiring renal replacement therapy with dialysis and transplantation will be emphasized. The trainee will acquire a competent clinical approach to these disorders based upon knowledge of their pathophysiology.  An understanding of the psychosocial impact of both acute and chronic kidney disorders is integrated with the medical aspects of treatment of renal disease, to assure more optimal outcomes for patients and their families.  Continuity of care over the three years occurs as the trainee follows patients with chronic disease throughout the three-year program.

The research component of the program will take advantage of the numerous research facilities available at this large medical center and university. The trainee will be offered the opportunity to perform basic scientific investigation using the newest techniques in cellular and molecular biology. Clinical research experience is supported by an NIH-funded General Clinical Research Center, and well-established multi-center collaborative research. Both basic science and clinical investigation training will emphasize the scientific principles of research and provide a foundation for the trainee to develop into an independent investigator. For the qualified trainee who may desire further postgraduate medical education, doctoral programs in selected fields are available.

During the initial year of training, the program is designed to develop the physician's confidence in clinical diagnosis, understanding the pathophysiology and medical treatment of disorders of the kidney. This experience includes therapy of acute renal failure and end stage renal disease, including hemodialysis, continuous hemofiltration, peritoneal dialysis and renal transplantation.  The training and experience include selection, performance and evaluation of procedures, including urinalysis, laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging studies, and the renal biopsy of native and transplanted kidneys.  The first year fellow develops an area of research interest, establishing a relationship with a research mentor. The second and third year of training continue to build on the knowledge base and skills acquired during the first year of the program, encouraging increasing independence of the trainee in decision-making and care of patients. Research interests established during the first year are further developed, with more protected time scheduled for investigation.

Educational experiences for Pediatric Nephrology Fellows include scheduled teaching conferences, seminars, and courses as well as hands-on clinical exposure.  Structured conferences in which fellows take an active role include:

  • Pediatric nephrology / urology radiology conference (weekly)
  • Combined pediatric/adult nephrology research journal club, research seminar, clinical journal club and nephrology grand rounds (weekly)
  • Pathology renal biopsy conference (monthly)
  • Pediatric dialysis conference (monthly)
  • Pediatric research conference (monthly)
  • Pediatric grand rounds (weekly)
  • Methodologies of research, including biostatistics, epidemiology, and research design
