Clinical Services   

 The faculty of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology is experienced in 

 

 

the care and treatment of pediatric heart disease. While each of the faculty has experience in the broad field of Pediatric Cardiology, each also has a particular “niche” of interest and expertise.  

Dr. Thomas Biancaniello – Chief, Professor of Pediatrics & Internal Medicine

Dr.  Biancaniello serves at the Division Chief.  He is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology. His principle interests are cardiac catheterization for diagnosis and interventional catheterization treatment of cardiovascular defects in adults and children.  He also leads the adult with congenital heart disease program. This is a growing group of patients who require follow-up care during adulthood for congenital defects.  

Dr. Rula Balluz – Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

Dr. Balluz specializes in non-Invasive and is exploring newer modalities such as tissue st

rain to assess heart function and 3-dimensional echocardiography. She is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology and has a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH)

Dr. Peter Morelli – Associate Professor of Pediatrics 

Dr. Morelli serves as the Director Non-invasive Laboratory and Preventive Cardiology.  He is Board Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology. The Non-invasive laboratories include echocardiography, stress testing and ambulatory electrocardiography. He also directs and runs the Fit Kids for Life program which is a unique life style modification program offering dietary consultation and exercise training for obese children and adolescents.

Dr. Laurie E. Panesar – Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

Dr. Panesar specializes in non-invasive testing including echocardiography, exercise stress testing and ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring.  Her non-invasive skills also include fetal echocardiography, a modality that identifies infants with congenital heart disease during fetal life. She is board certified in Pediatrics and board eligible in Pediatric Cardiology.  

Marybeth Heyden, RN, PNP (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner) – Instructor in Pediatrics

Ms. Heyden provides clinical care and support for the children and their families. She utilizes her years of experience as a nurse in Pediatric Intensive Care to supplement her training as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner to asses and care for our patients from outpatients to the intensive care units. She has special expertise in pre-operative and post-operative care. She is a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) instructor.  She teaches in the School of Nursing at Stony Brook.
