RESEARCH HISTOLOGY CORE LABORATORY
![]() |
The Stony Brook
Research Histology Core Lab provides
clinical and basic science investigators with access to a wide range of
histological procedures. The facility is managed by the Department of
Pathology
and offers gross processing of research tissue and cellular specimens,
including fixation, paraffin embedding, sectioning and staining. Both
routine
hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and advanced immunohistochemical
staining
methods are offered. The Core staff and scientific directors are also
available to assist in the development research protocols that depend on
the
processing of tissue or other cellular specimens. The core is
directed by Dr. Kenneth Shroyer and co-directed by Dr. Jingfang Ju. Technical support is provided by Mallory
Korman and Stephanie Burke.Kenneth R. Shroyer, MD, PhD, Director of the Research Histology Core Lab, also serves as Chair of the Department of Pathology. He is a board certified surgical pathologist and cytopathologist and has been engaged in the development of advanced methods in immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and the molecular analysis of tissues for over 30 years. In addition, he is an expert in tissue biobanking, microdissection, and in the use of tissue microarrays. Mallory Korman earned her undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Developmental Biology. She has had extensive training in the field of translational research histology and has been an active member of the Pathology Translational Research Laboratory in the Pathology Department since 2009. She is an experienced research histology technician with proficiency in histologic processing and sectioning of tissues, immunohistochemistry, and in the construction of tissue microarrays. |

The
laboratory is equipped with automated tissue processors, an embedding
station, microtomes, and automated immunostainers. Additional advanced
services, including preparation of research tissue microarrays, laser
capture microdissection, and other methods to support tissue-based
research may be arranged following consultation with the Core Lab
Director and/or the Associate Director. Please contact the Core Lab in advance of submitting specimens to discuss methods for sample collection and tissue fixation.
