Research Summary:
Dr. Botchkina completed her graduate training and dissertation for two disciplines: Human Physiology and Biophysics at the Lomonosov’s Moscow State University, Russia. Her postdoctoral training in neuroscience and molecular biology was completed at the University of California, San Francisco. Her current research is focused on cancer stem cells (CSCs) and CSC-targeted anti-cancer drug development. She was a pioneer in isolation, purification and characterization of prostate and colon CSCs here at SBU. The most current projects of Dr. Botchkina are focused on patient-derived CSCs and search for effective drug combinations for their abrogation. Her expertise in this area was reflected in several invited reviews, book chapters and peer-reviewed papers. She has also been engaged in the development of mathematical modeling of cancer stem cells biology in collaboration with the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
