Multiple Sclerosis/Neuroimmunology

Director: Lauren Krupp, M.D.
Fellowship Period: 1-2 years
Requirements: At least one year in an ACGME accredited neurology residency

DescriptionA one or two-year fellowship in multiple sclerosis is available in the Department of Neurology at Stony Brook University Medical Center sponsored through an Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program (ECRIP Fellowship) and outside funding. The fellowship offers clinical and research experience in the evaluation and treatment of adults and children with multiple sclerosis and related disorders (e.g. acute disseminated encephalomyelitis). The fellowship includes some course work related to research (e.g. statistics, clinical trial design), as well as participation in investigator and industry sponsored clinical trials.  In addition to treatment studies, current programatic research focuses on the cognitive, neurobehavioral, and mood related aspects of multiple sclerosis in adults and children. Other investigations are directed at defining biomarkers of the disease using advanced neuroimaging. Fellows will be encouraged to have individual projects and present their findings at national meetings.  There will also be extensive exposure to clinical assessment and management of individuals with multiple sclerosis. The program incorporates a multidisciplinary approach including neurology, psychiatry,  and neuropsychology. Past candidates at the completion of the fellowship have either pursued academic careers or joined clinical practices in which expertise in multiple sclerosis was sought. Most have gone on to direct their own multiple sclerosis centers. Applicants should have at least one year or more of training in an approved residency in Neurology.
