Welcome

Over the past decade, our superb, university-based medical center has grown significantly and has been recognized as a pillar of clinical and academic excellence on Long Island. At Stony Brook University Medical Center, residents are provided a unique and outstanding experience that allows them to build the skills necessary to become proficient in both internal medicine and pediatrics. In the Department of Medicine, residents will encounter a closed-faculty system on the inpatient service; enjoy an exceptional ambulatory primary care environment with a newly developed electronic medical record; appreciate the value of the state-of-the-art cardiac and oncologic technologies in our advanced heart and ambulatory oncology centers; be afforded the privilege of working in the sole bone-marrow transplant unit in Suffolk County, and much, much more. The bulk of residents’ training in the Department of Pediatrics will take place in Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital—the only university-based, dedicated children’s hospital on Long Island. Here, our residents gain a wealth of knowledge as they work alongside a team of leading general and subspecialty physicians, nurses, and research scientists.
The training facilities and options available at Stony Brook
are truly unparalleled. However, when
people ask, “What is the greatest strength of your med-peds program?”, we
proudly reply—“our residents.” Stony Brook’s med-peds residents are a
wonderful, tightly-knit group of people from diverse backgrounds who quickly form
strong and lasting bon
ds with one another. They are eager to learn, motivated
teachers, and the most compassionate colleagues one could hope to have. Through
experiences such as monthly journal clubs and “med-peds-only” weekly medicine clinic
sessions, our residents create a distinct program identity. This brings the program together in a way
that distinguishes it as an independent program, set apart in many ways from the
categorical programs. After graduating, our residents go on to become
generalists, both academic and community-based, in ambulatory and
hospitalist settings, as well as combined and individual sub-specialists,
academic physician scientists, and more.
We are looking for enthusiastic, concerned learners who want to take leadership roles in impacting their world through medicine. If this appeals to you, we welcome the opportunity to tell you more about ourselves, our program, and about Stony Brook—a place we now call home. Applications are accepted through ERAS beginning the first of September each academic year.
We wish you all the best on your journey into the exciting and rewarding world of med-peds and the possibilities that this select training path offers. Please contact us here at Stony Brook University Medical Center if we can assist you in any way.
Most sincerely,
Robert Reilly, MD and Kimberly Fenton, MD – Co-Directors, Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Training Program
