Welcome to Stony Brook University Medical Center’s Department of Internal Medicine Residency program. I have been residency program director
for almost 4 years, and it has been a privilege for me to work with this outstanding group of residents. We are in the midst of many exciting
changes in the residency program. First, we are able to take advantage of the tremendous clinical opportunities that Stony Brook offers. We
have a new Heart Center, where our physicians diagnose and treat heart disease in all its manifestations with the most sophisticated techniques available. We
have a Cancer Center going up that promises to bring the most advanced therapies to the patients of Suffolk County. Our research efforts as a
department are expanding similarly, and offer trainees a wealth of areas in which to learn about and engage in basic, clinical, and translational research. With
new investigative activities in diverse clinical areas such as congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, HIV, insulin resistance and diabetes,
gastrointestinal bleeding, colonic neoplasia, platelet function and metastatic cancers, and utilizing a broad array of investigative techniques from
proteomics and gene analysis through molecular and cellular techniques through clinical trials of drugs and devices, our department provides a rich,
rewarding research environment that keeps trainees abreast of cutting-edge medicine. The clinical services at Stony Brook are expanding as well:
we have recently built a new Heart Center, built a new Orthopedics unit, broken ground on a new Cancer Center, and a new Emergency Room, and will soon
be commencing work on a new Women’s Hospital. Within our department, we have revamped our physical space to make it both more useful as
well as more attractive, with a re-tooled resident Learning Center, new fellows’ rooms, and plans to renovate and expand the research space. With
our recent 5-year accreditation of our Medicine training program—the highest possible accreditation—we are heading into a bright future
at Stony Brook. We welcome you to explore all we have and see for yourself the energy and enthusiasm that we have.
