The Facilities

As a University, Stony Brook dates only to 1962. Since then, the University has a remarkable history of growth, expanding to 98 buildings on 1000 acres, with over 1,000 faculty members. Over the past decade, externally funded support for Stony Brook’s research program has grown faster than at any major institution.

Recognizing that the 2.5 million residents of Long Island were not served by an academic medical center, the state designated that the University include a School of Medicine, with the mandate that Stony Brook would be the flagship institution among the state medical schools. These actions resulted in the construction of the Health Sciences Center and the University Hospital with its 540 beds housed in a twin-towered complex. The hospital has been operational since 1981, and provides primary through tertiary-level care with state-of-the-art facilities.

The Veteran’s Affairs Hospital at Northport serves as the second main clinical campus for the School of Medicine. The VA Hospital occupies 400 rolling acres, and with its beautifully maintained buildings and grounds is often mistaken for a college campus. The hospital has 468 acute care beds and a 125 bed chronic care facility. The house staff, faculty and fellows all share joint appointments at both Stony Brook and at the VA.

The academic environment for clinical and investigative training at Stony Brook is superb. Internationally recognized faculty have established programs that provide an outstanding basic science infrastructure for the school. Of particular relevance to Endocrinology are programs in the Neurosciences (Neurobiology and Behavior, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry), Pharmacological Sciences, Physiology and Biochemistry. In addition, a diverse clinical faculty provide a committed, collegial academic atmosphere.
