| Cancer survivors of all ages will celebrate at “Survivor Stony Brook,” Stony Brook University Medical Center’s Fifth Annual National Cancer Survivors Day Event on June 7. |
STONY BROOK, NY, May 28, 2009 – On Sunday, June 7, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, Stony Brook University Medical Center will host its fifth annual National Cancer Survivors Day® on the grounds of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care Pavilion. “Survivor Stony Brook,” named after the “Survivor” TV show, brings hundreds of cancer survivors together to celebrate their victories over disease with their physicians, SBUMC staff, and their families.
National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual celebration in hundreds of communities worldwide. The non-profit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation (http://www.ncsdf.org) supports hundreds of hospitals and support groups nationwide. “Survivor Stony Brook” honors all patients who are living with and beyond cancer, as well as an important role family and friends play in the lives of cancer survivors.
The celebration features live music by a collection of talented SBUMC doctors and nurses, games for kids such as “Dunk-a-Doc” and “Chemo bag toss,” face-painting, a yoga demonstration, and meditation sessions. Brightly colored decorations, survivors in “battle gear” decked out in neon green, and some patients and volunteers in camouflage shorts, all reflect the Survivor show theme. Light refreshments will also be served.
For more information about participating or volunteering for “Survivor Stony Brook,” please call Stony Brook Health Connect at 631-444-4000. For more information about outpatient cancer services at SBUMC, call 631-638-1000.
