THE PRIMARY CARE TRACK OF THE INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Our Primary Care Track offers the opportunity for in-depth training in primary care medicine for residents whose goal is to practice general internal medicine. Our primary care track offers a continuity ambulatory experience constituting 30% of the three-year residency program. Special features include:
- “4 + 1” schedule – 4 weeks inpatient medicine alternating with 1 week ambulatory medicine throughout the year
- PGY-1 rotations in Primary Care areas:
- A “Psychosocial Month” focuses on the psychosocial aspects of medicine
- In-depth experience in interviewing techniques
- Enhanced learning about the many social and psychological issues which affect patients
- PGY-2 and -3 rotations in Primary Care areas:
- Women’s Health
- Musculoskeletal Medicine
- Dermatology
- “Practice Primary Care Month”, designed to expose Primary Care residents to the varied settings in which primary care is practiced, including rural medicine, a clinic which serves the medically indigent, and a suburban private practice.
- Primary Care Conference Series
- Review of clinical topics in primary care medicine
- Small group, evidence-based approach
- Women’s Health Track offered within the Primary Care Track
- Exceptional opportunity to develop special skills in the primary care of women
- Residents have continuity outpatient gynecology as well as medicine continuity practice
