Honors, Awards & Affiliations:
Dr. Jonas is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences (elected), the American College of Preventive Medicine, the American Public Health Association, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the Royal Society of Medicine (UK) . He is a Past President of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine, and a past member of the New York State Board for Medicine. He is Editor-in-Chief of the American Medical Athletic Association Journal. He is the recipient of the Founders’ Medal for Contributions to Medical Education, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (1982), the Duncan Clark Career Achievement Award, Association for Prevention, Teaching, and Research (formerly Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine) (2006), the Faculty Recognition Award of the Graduate Program in Public Health, Stony Brook University (2008), and the Yale School of Public Health, Distinguished Alumni Award (2010).
Research Activities & Projects:
Currently working on another book on multi-sport racing (see below), and book project development in health promotion/disease prevention in clinical practice, recreational drug-use policy, and recreational skiing.
He has authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited 14 books of his own and has collaborated on 19 others, ranging from the first text book on the US health care system, Health Care Delivery in the United States , first published in 1977, (New York: Springer Publishing Co., 1977), to the first book on the sport of triathlon for beginners, Triathloning for Ordinary Mortals (New York: W.W. Norton, 1986, "Updated and Expanded" edition, 1999; 20th anniversary 2nd edition in preparation, 2006); to the first preventive medicine textbook organized around risk factors rather than around diseases, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Clinical Practice (Baltimore, MD: Williams and Wilkins, 1996; 2nd ed. Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, 2007), to ACSM’s Exercise is Medicine tm: A Clinician’s Guide to Exercise Prescription (Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, with Edward M. Phillips, MD as co-author), the official textbook for the American College of Sports Medicine international program, "Exercise is Medicine tm," to the first modern book on the sport of duathlon only, Duathlon Training and Racing for Ordinary Mortals®: Getting Started and Staying with It (Guilford, CT: FalconGuides: Globe Pequot Press, 2012).
On health policy, preventive medicine and public health, and drug abuse policy, Dr. Jonas has published over 135 professional articles, book chapters, and book reviews, and has delivered well over 100 papers at conferences and seminars. In addition, he has published numerous articles in the lay press, primarily on exercise and sports, and for both lay and professional audiences has given many talks on various aspects of health, fitness, and wellness. Further, on these topics he has had regular columns in several national publications (one currently), both lay and professional.
