Clinical Programs Accepting Gifts
All gifts to Stony Brook University can be made for unrestricted use,
allowing SBUH to use the funds where they are needed most. Gifts may also be
designated for a specific program or service. Below is a list of clinical
programs for which you may make a targeted donation:
Heart Center
Stony Brook University Medical Center's Heart Center combines life-saving
medical and surgical techniques with methods to deliver better care to our
patients. Stony Brook operates the only heart center on Long Island that offers
patients a unique patient-focused approach to care that constitutes a major
improvement over the traditional academic practice of separating the services of
cardiac surgeon and cardiologist. Recognizing heart disease as the nation's
number on killer, Stony Brook is the only hospital in Suffolk County that
performs highly specialized cardiology procedures, such as advanced
interventional, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for life-threatening heart
problems afflicting a wide range of patients.
Stony Brook University Cancer Center
The mission statement of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center is to
establish a multidisciplinary, comprehensive cancer center and community network
for the entire region; provide the best clinical care for patients and their
families; conduct world-class basic research on the molecular features of
cancer; and conduct translational research research to move the newest advances
in research to the patient bedside. We anticipate great progress in creating new
methods for the early detection of cancer and finding new ways to treat it. With
the opening of the Cancer Center, Long Islanders will no longer have to leave
the Island to find comprehensive and highly advanced cancer care: they will find
the best possible care in the world already close to home at Stony Brook. For
additional information, visit the Stony Brook University Cancer Center web
site.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Stony Brook University Medical Center is the only provider of
tertiary/quaternary care services for neonatal and premature infants in Suffolk
County. Many babies admitted to our specially equipped neonatal intensive care
unit are born prematurely and need careful observation and monitoring. Stony
Brook's neonatologists and specially trained nurses work closely with
cardiologists, surgeons, and other University Medical Center specialists to
guide these and other seriously ill babies along the path to a speedy and full
recovery.
Burn Center
Stony Brook University Medical Center is the home of Suffolk County's only
designated Burn Center, which provides the most sophisticated, compassionate
care to both adults and children with major burns. Our Burn Center is an
eight-bed unit designed and equipped to meet the special needs of burn patients.
Through its commitment to the local community, the Burn Center has gained the
enthusiastic backing of Suffolk's volunteer firefighters, who created the
Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center Fund to help support special clinical and
research initiatives. One such initiative led to the creation of our Living Skin
Bank which provides a unique clinical resource for wound dressings, that is,
novel skin grafts made of cultured epithelial cells taken from the patient's own
healthy skin.
Emergency Room
As Suffolk County's only Regional Level 1 Trauma Center, helicopter and
ground transports deliver's most seriously injured and ill patients to
University Medical Center. Our seven-bed shock trauma room is specifically
designed for treating patients with problems ranging from multiple traumas to
cardiogenic shock. The Emergency Department also serves as the county referral
center for all psychiatric emergencies. For additional information, visit the
Emergency Room web site.
