Dr. Schiavone joined the faculty at Stony Brook in 1988 as Director of Medical Education.  He was appointed the Associate Residency Director and then Residency Director for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program.  In 2001, Dr. Schiavone was appointed Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education in the Stony Brook School of Medicine.

Dr. Schiavone is actively involved in teaching MCS (Medicine in a Contemporary Society), ICM (Introduction to Clinical Medicine).  He has been awarded several teaching awards at Stony Brook.  He has also served on the Board of Directors of New York ACEP. 

His academic interests include medical education, domestic violence, child abuse and environmental medicine issues.
