DIETETIC INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
AT STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY
Stony Brook University Dietetic Internship Highlights
- During your clinical outpatient and public health nutrition rotations, you are directly supervised by Registered Dietitians in the Department of Family Medicine at Stony Brook University, including the program director and program coordinator. These professionals are committed to your training and the success of the program.
- Your training is integrated with the training of Family Medicine residents during your outpatient rotation. Therefore, you routinely interact with physicians, medical residents, nurses and nurse practitioners at interdisciplinary case conferences, grand rounds, walking rounds and informal educational activities.
- The Department of Family Medicine’s Chronic Illness and Wellness Center integrates traditional medicine, complementary medicine and nutrition in providing holistic care to patients. You will have the opportunity to work with the Center’s staff as part of the clinical outpatient rotation. During this rotation, you will work with the Family Medicine Registered Dietitians and apply these principles to medical nutrition therapy services. Dietetic interns are also involved with preparing and taste testing meals consistent with various elimination diets used as part of integrative care.
- Interns will have a two-week elective rotation as part of the Internship experience. The placement options may include the following types of outpatient facilities: private practice, bariatric services, Stony Brook University’s Athletic Department, and an organic farm.
- Other rotations will include: in-patient clinical nutrition therapy, outpatient clinical nutrition therapy, long-term care, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children), and school and institutional food service.
- Throughout the year, interns attend professional development seminars on resume writing, interviewing, professional portfolio development and preparing for the registration examination.
