PROGRAM EMPHASES
Program Concentrations
Clinical Nutrition Therapy
The clinical nutrition therapy concentration builds on the resources of the Stony Brook University Medical Center and advances knowledge and skills related to integration of pathophysiology and emerging evidence-based guidelines in the nutrition care process, including nutrition therapy for medically complex patients. In addition, advanced counseling and educational skills are emphasized, as is the promotion of breastfeeding. Selecting this concentration will maximize your preparation for a career in clinical nutrition in inpatient, outpatient and/or long term care facilities.
Concentration Specific Competencies
CNT1: Integrate pathophysiology and current emerging evidence-based guidelines into the nutrition care process.
CNT2: Calculate, monitor, and evaluate complex enteral and parenteral nutrition regimes.
CNT3: Conduct counseling and education for patients/clients with complex needs, considering cultural dietary habits, use of supplements, and use of integrative therapy.
CNT 4: Promote and educate on all aspects of breast feeding from both an individual and public health perspective.
Public Health Nutrition
The public health nutrition concentration builds on resources available through public health nutrition grants to develop skills in community assessment and monitoring, as well as the creation, implementation and evaluation of public health nutrition interventions. Interns are involved in funded, public health nutrition outcomes-based research projects. Selecting this concentration will prepare you for a position with university-based public health research centers, county or state departments of health, government agencies such as the NIH or CDC, grant-funded projects housed at universities or non-for-profit agencies, and congressional affairs analyst or legislative coordinator for a trade association or non-for-profit agency.
Concentration Specific Competencies
PHN1: Participate in nutrition surveillance and monitoring of communities.
PHN2: Participate in the development of networks to facilitate agency’s public health project nutrition
PHN3: Develop and implement public health nutrition interventions, including policy development.
PHN4: Participate in public health nutrition program outcomes-based research.
PHN5: Consult with other organizations regarding food access for target populations.
NOTE: Interns complete the same rotations and modules, and attain the associated advanced competencies in the areas of clinical nutrition therapy and public health. Opportunities are provided through a three week concentration-specific rotation, such as a dialysis center, a food bank or a community garden, to develop depth of knowledge and skills related to concentrations.
