Office of Dental Research

The Stony Brook University, School of Dental Medicine is among the elite research-intensive dental schools in the nation, being ranked 15th in 2009 among NIH/NIDCR-funded dental schools. We have a long tradition of translational research, with 58 patents and 26 patents-pending for novel oral health care products and anti-inflammatory drugs. We are currently leading the country in clinical trials of periodontal disease and diabetes and cardiovascular disease through our Patient Oriented Research Center.  Our research programs center on host modulation, inflammation, mucosal immunity, epithelial-stem cell biology and psychosocial-behavioral factors in oral health. The research labs occupy approximately 19,000 square feet of space housed in Westchester, Rockland, and Dutchess Halls. We are an integrated part of a broader research community at Stony Brook University with extensive research collaborations with the School of Medicine, Materials Science and Engineering, Dermatology, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Public Health, Epidemiology, Psychology and Cardiology.

The Office of Research, located at 164 Rockland Hall, is staffed by the Associate Dean for Research (C.W Cutler), Director of Patient Oriented Research (S. Engebretson), Clinical Research Coordinator (R. Tenzler) and Senior Staff Assistant (E. Schroeder).

The MISSION of the Office of Research is to enhance the discovery of new knowledge in oral craniofacial and systemic health by increasing the involvement of our faculty and our next generation of clinical- and basic- scientists, the undergraduate, graduate and dental students, in our research endeavors.
