Possible Pitfalls in Conducting a SWOT Analysis
- Participants can confuse “strengths” and “opportunities,” on the one hand; and “weaknesses” and “threats,” on the other. Strengths are considered internal to the organization, and opportunities are external. The facilitator can merely put the suggestion in the appropriate quadrant at the flipchart, or re-label the suggestion when consolidating suggestions later. The “right” placement is less important than capturing the idea.
- Staff can be reluctant to participate when their supervisors or physicians are present. On the other hand, some staff may tend to monopolize the conversation. The facilitator can avert this potential problem by asking each individual staff member to read one item from their own lists.
