Bryan Knipfing of Shelter Island took top honors as the winner of the second annual Flying Point 10K in Water Mill on Sunday, September 23.
The race was once again a huge success, raising nearly $15,000 for the Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities at Stony Brook University, with funds raised this year specifically earmarked for services on the East End.
This year’s event once again featured a 50-yard dash on the beach for kids won this year by Robert McDuguall (boys) and Cailee McCarthy (girls) In addition, race founder Kim Covell added a 2K “fun walk” that started moments after the main event. The 10K once again attracted more than 200 runners, which, when added to the approximately 75 walkers, meant that the 2007 edition of the FP10K was bigger and better than the first. Elizabeth Hashagen, News12 morning anchor, was this year’s honorary starter.
A local band proves charity does begin at home as members of Hale Eddy, raise $600 through A Concert for a Cure to benefit the Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Funds raised on behalf of the Cody Center will be used to provide scholarship money for those families who cannot pay the full fee for social skills training; an educational service provided by the Cody Center designed to help children with autism interact successfully with others and form friendships. Social skills training is not a medical service and is not billable to health insurance. The scholarship funds will help families with demonstrated financial obtain these vital services for their children.
Exclusive Allstate Agent, Jeff Freund, championed the Allstate Foundation donation to the Cody Center after he met with and discussed the prevalence of Autism with client, Jayne Schnieder, PhD. Dr. Schneider, a Research Associate at the Cody Center, is dedicated to research into the causes of Autism and related developmental disabilities. She collaborates in her research with Kenneth Gadow, Ph.D., and Carla DeVincent, Ph.D.
The Weatherman predicted it and the papers printed it, but we just couldn’t believe it, the worst April storm in 15 years. The Cody Center Walk was scheduled rain or shine, but a Nor’easter, that’s just something we didn’t plan for. To make-up for our bad luck, we rescheduled the Walk to June 3rd - Rain or Shine. And Shine it did!
With over 220 walkers, including children with developmental disabilities and their families as well as the Stony Brook University Community, the 2nd Annual Cody Center Walk was a huge success. Our face painters were busy all morning long, while the exhibitor tables educated consumers about their latest projects and children both young and old jumped non-stop on the bouncy. Although the 2nd Annual Cody Center Walk had a false start, the finish was amazing with such enthusiasm and excitement.
Thanks to your generosity we raised over $7,000 to support community education and research at the Cody Center. If you were unable to attend the rain date and collected sponsors for the walk, you can mail your donations to: Cody Center, c/o Cody Walk, 177 Putnam Hall, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-8788
The Cody Center would like to thank all of our friends who made this Walk such a success, especially our dedicated volunteers who continue to give again and again. We would also like to recognize the major contribution of Starbucks Coffee who donated both coffee and breakfast for our volunteers and supplied all of our attendees with freshly brewed tasty coffee.
Thank you again for your support and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s Walk on April 27, 2008!

Laughter was in the air at the 11th Annual Cody Comedy Festival at Stony Brook University. It was an evening of entertainment at the Staller Center with a blockbuster comedy show including live stand up performances by Dan Wilson, Ted Alexandro and Joey Kola. The successful event was attended by over 700 guests and raised over $185,000 for research and program development efforts to benefit individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities.
The exciting evening began with dinner and cocktails at the Funny Bone Reception where a silent auction table displayed items including a Martha Clara VIP private wine tasting, jewelry, field box seats at a Mets game and an overnight stay at the historic 1770 House Restaurant and Inn. Event Chairman, Edward Nitkewicz, conducted the live auction and kept the crowd laughing as they bid.
Guests will remember Matt Cody’s poignant remarks thanking guests for attending and supporting the Cody Center. He encouraged guests to take action and write to their local legislators to support current initiatives funding research and services for the growing population on the autism spectrum. He closed by saying, “On behalf of my wife Debbie and my three autistic children, thank you for coming tonight. We love you.”
The Cody Center would like to thank our valuable committee members, without whom this event would not have been so successful and our very generous sponsors who find the way to support us every year! Thank you to everyone who attended the show. We look forward to seeing you next year!
