Cardiac Care Turf Wars

STONY BROOK, NY, October 1, 2007 - On Saturday, October 13, the Heart Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center will host a medical symposium entitled "Meeting of the Minds: Emergent Therapies in Cardiovascular Disease, Outcomes and Evidence-Based Medicine." Designed for cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, internists and other health care professionals with a special interest in the field of cardiovascular disease, this one-day enlightening and educational adventure takes place at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University.

Led by Heart Center Co-Directors Todd K. Rosengart, M.D., Professor and Chief, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and David L. Brown, M.D., Professor and Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, "Meeting of the Minds" was developed at the request and suggestion of community physicians in and around Suffolk County. It has emerged as an educational showcase offered by the Heart Center team at Stony Brook and an elite group of invited faculty, making it a virtual "who's who" of cardiovascular medicine and cardiothoracic surgery. Also on the agenda is luncheon guest speaker John J. Connolly, Ed.D, of Castle Connolly publications who will discuss how physicians are selected to the widely merchandised "best doctors" publications.

"It is our hope that this format, focused on outcomes and evidence-based medicine in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, will more than fulfill continuing medical education needs, and provide an excellent opportunity to network with colleagues," says Dr. Rosengart.

Interspersed among four sessions of the most timely issues facing heart specialists today will be two lively debates: "To Stent or Not to Stent?" and "Carotid Stenting: Is there a Role for ‘Open' (Surgical) Approaches?" The Symposium concludes with an hour-long review of difficult cases which will cover issues raised, surgical techniques used and why, difficulties overcome during each case, and a look at the medical management of each case.

"Our community will be best served when we collaborate, explore and critique decisions based on evidence and clinical data," says Dr. Brown.

Specific learning objectives of "Meeting of the Minds" include: Understanding the role of drug eluting stents and recognize with improved accuracy the indications for use; discuss the current state of Electrophysiology improving treatment outcomes for patients; examine and assess the treatment therapies and benefits of percutaneous heart valve therapy; evaluate and implement different techniques for mitral valve repair; measure the benefits and limitations of minimally invasive valves and their use in complex cardiac cases; understand and implement effective treatment strategies in peripheral vascular stenting, diseases of the aorta, and primary angioplasty; compare and contrast the treatment of female vs. male patients ultimately choosing the appropriate treatment option; and, review and discuss the medical management of patients using a multi-disciplinary approach. The symposium concludes with a champagne reception and networking opportunity.

Co-sponsored by the Stony Brook University School of Medicine Department of Continuing Medical Education, the symposium is $350 for physicians and industry representatives and $50 for Stony Brook University faculty and staff.
