Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center
At Stony Brook University Medical Center, breast cancer is the focus of a comprehensive, academic program—the only one of its kind on Long Island. At its core is our multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Team. To patients, this means an extraordinary range of clinical resources and technologies, a treatment plan tailor-made to their needs, and a caring, compassionate group of clinical experts providing encouragement every step of the way. We provide this extraordinary level of care to more than 450 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients each year.

The Breast Care Center has been a pioneer in many ways, including being the first on Long Island to offer digital mammography and being one of only seven centers in the world equipped with a tomosynthesis machine. This experimental technology, which produces 3D mammogram images ideal for women with dense breasts, is still in the testing stage. Stony Brook's breast cancer surgeons specialize in breast conservation surgery and were the first on Long Island to offer the less invasive sentinel node biopsy.

From genetic counseling for inheritable cancers to novel chemotherapies to a highly specialized lymphedema program, Stony Brook breast cancer programs and services are unparalleled in the region.

Stony Brook offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic, treatment and follow-up services for patients with breast cancer, including expedited diagnosis and technologically advanced radiation, surgical, and systemic therapies. See Diagnostics, Treatments & Technologies for more information.  Highlights include:
  • Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center  Multidiscliplinary, expedited diagnostic services with a surgeon and radiologist on site to review mammographic and clinical findings together (not just by report).
  • Genetic counseling  A specialized genetic counselor is available to women and families dealing with inheritable breast cancers.
  • Lymphedema program In conjunction with the Department of Physical and Occupational Therapy, patients have access to a comprehensive, highly specialized lymphedema evaluation and treatment program. The lymphedema program incorporates the principles of CDT (Complete Decongestive Therapy) to address tissue swelling in individuals undergoing or having received treatment for cancer.  For more information, call 631 444-4240.
  • MammoSite® radiation for breast cancer permits full lumpectomy radiation in five days for some cancers, instead of six weeks of external radiation. Its appropriateness depends on specific factors. Your doctor can advise you on this option.
Our exceptional clinical support services contribute to coordinated care. These include Nutrition Services, Pain Management, Palliative Care/Survivorship & Support, Pharmacy Services, Physical and Occupational Rehabilitation, Therapeutic Yoga, and our Tumor Board. For more information, see Clinical Support Services.

Stony Brook participates in a broad range of breast cancer clinical trials and basic research, including:
  • Profiling. One study, called TAILORx Trial (Trial Assigning Individualized Options for Treatment), looks at genetic profiling of tumors to determine which patients need chemotherapy.
  • Novel chemotherapy. Seeking to define tomorrow's treatment regimens, Stony Brook oncologists are involved in studies of standard and novel chemotherapy regimens—as well as new combinations that can dramatically improve survival rates. For patients who have resistant tumors, Phase II clinical studies offer new hope for a cure through experimental therapies.

For information, see Innovations & Research in Cancer. For specific clinical trial listings, see our Current Clinical Trials.

SBUMC is a LIVESTRONG® Community Impact Project Award recipient.

The project, created by LIVESTRONG, the organization founded by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong to serve people affected by cancer and empower them to take action, will bring a proven cancer support program to SBUMC and other communities in the U.S. SBUMC is the first medical center in New York State to secure the award. SBUMC will use the $4,000 award to launch a six-week educational and support program, called Cancer Transitions™, for cancer survivors. Cancer Transitions is designed to support, educate, and empower people with cancer in the transitional period after treatment is over.

SBUMC earns Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation.

SBUMC’s Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy).

Breast Center Receives Prestigious Accreditation.

In 2009, our Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center, located in Stony Brook's outpatient Cancer Center, became one of a small group of breast centers in the nation—and the first in New York State—to receive a full, three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). During this rigorous review process, the Carol Baldwin Breast Center met or exceeded all 27 standards covering such areas as imaging, treatment options, breast conservation, staging, genetic evaluation, clinical trials, and quality outcomes. The Center performs more than 8,000 mammograms and 2,000 sonograms annually.

New Radiation System Reduces Treatment Time

Stony Brook's breast surgeons and radiation oncologists are now using the new MammoSite® radiation system. This highly targeted treatment involves implanting tiny radioactive seeds in the cancer site. The advantage is that full lumpectomy radiation can be delivered in five days instead of the traditional six weeks of external radiation to the entire breast. The department also provides partial breast radiation via 3D conformal radiotherapy. These therapies, appropriate only for certain types of breast cancer, involve 10 treatments over five days. Ask your doctor for more information.
