Burn Center
As the only designated burn care facility for the more than 1.5 million residents of Suffolk County, the Burn Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center coordinates burn services throughout the county, and provides a resource for training and research in Burn Care. The Burn Center also serves as a resource to neighboring community based hospitals.
The Burn Center at University Hospital has been specially equipped, staffed and designed to provide sophisticated, compassionate care to both adult and pediatric patients with major burns. Having recognized the highly complex needs of burn patients and their families, the staff at the Burn Center is multi-disciplinary in its approach to the planning and coordination of the care of the patient.
The professional burn care team includes specially trained physicians and nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nutritionists, social workers, pain management experts, psychiatric consultation liaison nurse and chaplaincy. Through this coordinated effort the patients receive expert care throughout the continuum, beginning with the burn injury and ending with rehabilitation and out-patient follow-up.
The Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center Fund has become central to the mission of the Burn Center by providing financial assistance through fund raising for education and research, by donating specialized equipment to the Burn Unit and increasing awareness in the community about Burn Prevention.
