The Office for Faculty Affairs oversees the policies and procedures related to faculty appointments and promotions for the School of Medicine at Stony Brook University Medical Center.  This office also advises faculty members, department chairs, and administrative offices on policies regarding recruitment of new faculty, retention of faculty, compensation, and leaves of absences.   

 

Mission

The Office for Faculty Affairs is committed to providing a nurturing environment that will allow each faculty member to grow to their full potential as a teacher, scholar, and human being.
 
Functions
  • Provide a support system for faculty who participate in teaching, research, and clinical activities
  • Facilitate the recruitment, appointment, promotion, and retention of faculty
  • Support the work of the Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Committee (APT)
  • Maintain appointment and promotion guidelines
  • Oversee faculty tracks and maintain databases
  • Provide assistance and consultation to faculty and department chairs relating to the development of existing/new faculty
  • Coordinate resources and opportunities to support the professional development of faculty members in the SoM
  • Oversee the process of faculty evaluation
  • Conduct an annual new faculty orientation

  • Introduce current academic methods and useful teaching tips to faculty
  • Encourage faculty to engage in the scholarship of education
