Ellison Pierce Patient Safety Award
During or after giving birth, some women will suffer maternal hemorrhage, another phrase for heavy bleeding. If it is not stopped, this hemorrhaging can lead to illness and sometimes death.
To help combat this serious complication, Rishimani Adsumelli, M.D., M.B.B.S., F.F.A.R.C.S., a Stony Brook University Medical Center Anesthesiologist, along with several co-authors, developed an effective approach to both identifying high-risk patients, and putting life-saving safety measures in place. She presented this approach in an exhibit: "Maternal Hemorrhage: A Proactive Multidisciplinary Approach to Reduce Mortality and Morbidity.”
For these efforts, Dr. Adsumelli received the Ellison Pierce Patient Safety Award. The award, named after its founder Dr. Ellison Pierce, is the highest award given by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation.
