Stony Brook University Medical Center is home to Long Island’s only University-Based Heart Center, where more than 500 surgeries are performed each year. The Center offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Our staff includes 50 full-time and community-based, board-certified cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons.

| • | SBUMC received its second Hospital Association of New York State (HANYS) Pinnacle Award—one of only four given out annually among the 14 medical schools and affiliated
hospitals competing - for converting our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) into a high reliability unit, a place with failure-free operation over time. |
| • | SBUMC was the recipient of a 2009 award for excelling in care for cardiac and pulmonary conditions. This award was given to only five percent of the 4,971 hospitals reviewed by an independent rating company. |
| • | SBUMC received Coronary Intervention and Cardiac Surgery Excellence Awards from an independent health ranking company, which recognizes the caliber of cardiac care provided compared to all other hospitals in the nation. |
| • | SBUMC was the recipient of a 2009 award for excellence in cardiac surgery. This award was presented to only ten

| • | SBUMC’s Code H Lifesaving Initiative Team, our program designed to get patients quickly into the cardiac catheterization laboratory for lifesaving angioplasty, took top honors in the Long Island Business News “Achievements in Healthcare” category.
