Stony Brook University Medical Center consistently works for and achieves excellence in every department by setting the highest standards and expectations for all.

Awards

SBUMC was presented with a Silver Medal from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for being among the 428 hospitals in the nation with the highest organ donor rates. The Center had achieved a donation rate of more than 75% among eligible donors and were able to increase the number of organs donated per individual donor to 3.75 or more.
SBUMC’s Renal Transplant Service received a Transplant Volume Award (for being one of only five centers in the country to achieve a greater than 20% increase in volume of deceased donor transplants); was one of only seven centers to receive the Transplant Growth and Management Overall Achievement Award, and received the Referral to Listing Award (for achieving a significant decrease in the median referral-to-listing time from a high of 394 days in June 2007 to 45 days in August 2008)
SBUMC received a Reader’s Choice Award from Advance, a national Nursing Journal, for quality of care, organizational culture, communication, professional development, and retention efforts. SBUMC Nursing was also recognized as one of the best in the NY/NJ region in the category of retention of RNs.
Rapid Response Team Task Force received the 2008 President’s Award and was recognized by President Shirley Strum Kenny at the University Convocation.

Special Recognitions

SBUMC was recognized as a leader in glucose control among 30 participating Critical Care Learning Collaborative Hospitals, by The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). The Center submitted a summation on its efforts to achieve tight glucose control for publication on the Institute’s “Success Story” Web site.
SBUMC ‘s Endoscopy Unit has been designated a “Recognized Endoscopy Unit” by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) for a period of three years.
SBUMC was recognized by the Red Cross for increasing blood donations.
SBUMC achieved a four-star rating for Quality and Accountability by University HealthSystem Consortium in 2008 and was placed at number 17 in the nation compared to the 102 UHC member academic medical centers.
